INTRODUCTION
This book wil tell something about the Stellinga-family. My father Govert Stellinga started searching for his ancestors shortly after World War II and since then we expanded our knowledge about the Stellinga’s to what we know now. We got information from other Stellinga-members and from several Dutch provincial archives. There are still lots of questions remaining…
There are 4 “streams” kown to me, streams I cannot connect to each other up to now. Also there are some Stellinga’s of whom we did not discover the link to the others.
I call the biggest and longest “stream” in the family stream A. This stream is my family. This stream is flowing from 1625 till present. Not all side-streams are known to me. For this stream I refer you to chapter 2.
Stream B was “discovered” second and is flowing from about 1540- 1650. We still have not managed to connect stream B to stream A. Simular are apart from the family name the male first name Wybren. More about that in chapter 3 This stream B was found in Minnertsga, where the name and the familiy-arms were found on a gravestone (1620) on the graveyard near the church. Searching for the stone on the graveyard had no results. Maybe because the church burnt down in 1948. The damaged gravestones were cleared after the fire... Our knowledge about this family tree comes completely from the Archives in Leeuwarden, Friesland.
I can tell a lot about stream C. Simular with stream A is the first name Pier (=Pieter). Simular with stream B is the first name Ane or Anne (Johannes?). This stream goes, as far as I know, from 1700 till today from Wijckel through Gorredijk and Haskerland up to 1830 in Rheezerveen. More about this stream in chapter 4.
I discovered by genealogical research another stream. I will call it stream D.In this stream unusual names like Homme, Theunis and Rein. I haven't found a connection with the other families yet...
All my direct ancestors I give a number according the principle of the family series: When I have number 1, my father has number 2 and my mother that number +1; my grandfather fatherside is 4, my mother's father 6, his wife, my grandmother 6 + 1 (=7😂) I place the appropriate numbers before the name followed by the birth year of that person...

CHAPTER 2 STREAM A: MY FAMILY
2.1 MY ANCESTORS BEFORE 1800
Starting with Pijer Thijssen the Stellinga family can be searched. This is a far bigger job then finding the pedigree as done in chapter 1. What I know, I wil explain:
I know very little about the oldest Stellinga's. Mr. W. Tj. Vleer, searching the relatives of RUURD JOHANNES STELLINGA 1877 in about 1950-1960, stated that 2048 Pijer Thijssen to appear in an official paper dated 26-1-1625. More I do not know. 1024 Thijs Piers was in 1640 owner and user of "plaats" 42 (peace of land numbered 42) in Oude Mirdum. About son Wybren Tijsses we know more: he was owner and/ or user os some "plaatsen". Hij was probably married to Getjen Hendriks and had at least 2 sons: Thijs and Pier. Thijs was baptised on 8-2-1695 and Pier on 25-11-1695.

----PIERKE WIEBRENS, probably a daughter from a previous marriage.
----TIJS/ THIJS WYBRENS 1695, ~8-2-1695 Oudemirdum. According “Omschrijvinge van familiën in Friesland” (census) of 1744 Tijs lives together with his brother Pier Wybrens in Oudemirdum, Gaasterland, Friesland in a family of 7 persons. He was a wealthy farmer; his name is also written as Thys Wybbrens; He probably moves in May 1767 to Sloten; In Sloten, dated 05-1767: from Stavoren, on 28-12-1768 registered as a resident, on 20-12-1769 registered as a citizen.
----256 PIER WYBRENS 1695, ~25-11-1695 Oudemirdum. Pier Wybrens 1695 was owner and user of plaats 13 and 14 (in 1738 and 1748 together with his brother Thijs, in 1758 and 1768 alone). In February 1724 he is registered as a member of the reformed church, on the membership list of 1741 en 1779 he is registered as a widower.
Pier Wybrens had at least 2 sons:

-----128 RUURD PIERS ~August 1740 in Oude Mirdum, xWytske Jacobs. Ruurd Piers was farmer in Oude Mirdum (partly on plaats 13 en 14). He died apparently before 1811. His wife Wytske Jakobs officially takes the name Stellinga as her family-name, she was 65 jaar old then. She does this together with 2 (nl. Jakob en Wybren) of her sons. At that moment December, 24 1811 Wytske Jakobs declares, that she has 3 sons, Jacob, Wybren en Tijs. Her son Pier Ruurds is not mentioned! Pier probably died before 1811. Pier Ruurds was born 30-10-1773 and baptised 7-11-1773 in Oude Mirdum (see chapter 2.2.2). Information about Jakob Ruurds Stellinga (*1-1-1769) is in chapter 2.2.1, my direct ancestor 64 Wybren Ruurds (*4-10-1776) and his descendants in chapter 2.2.3. and information about Tijs Ruurds (*18-10-1781) you will find in chapter 2.2.4

CHAPTER 2.2 THE STELLINGA'S NA 1800
2.2.1 JAKOB RUURDS STELLINGA 1769
Jakob Ruurds 1769 officially takes the name Stellinga as his family-name on 24-12-1811, just like his mother Wytske Jacobs. He was married to Janke Jelles (Hoekstra). For her it was her second marriage; she already had a daughter Sijke Jarigs from her forst marriage with Jarig Jakobs. Jarig Jakobs died in about 1795 overleden. Janke Jelles remarried as the widow of Jarig Jacobs to JACOB RUURDS STELLINGA 1769. Jakob Ruurds and Janke Jelles had more children. Jakob Ruurds died on 8-11-1818 in the "Proefkolonie" in Drente. The establishment of the "Proefkolonie" (Experimental Colony) marked the creation of Frederiksoord, the first colony created by the "Maatschappij van Weldadigheid" (Society of Benevolence). In this village this Society tried to re-educate impoverished compatriots from all over the Netherlands giving them a chance of a better life. The year 1818 wasn't a good year for Jakob's family: his 2 year old son Pier dies on Januari 25, his wife Janke dies shortly before departure to the "Proefkolonie" on October 9 and he himself shortly after arrival in the "Proefkolonie" (Frederiksoord) on 8-11-1818.

-Sijke Jarigs (Stellinga) 1793, born 20-11-1793 in Molkwerum; in 1816 she has the name Stellinga as she is called Sijke Jarigs Stellinga when she married Jacob Jans Bijlsma op 11-9-1816 te Woudsend.
-Wytske Jakobs (Stellinga/ Stellingwerf) 1798, *20-2-1798 Molkwerum, xAnne Heintjes van der Werf 18-4-1833 Hemelumer Oldeferd. She married for the second time to Feike Cornelis Harkema on 28-9-1856 in Stavoren. Wytske (Wietske) died on 15-4-1858 in Stavoren, 59 years old.

-Ruurd Jakobs Stellinga/ Stellenga/ Hellinga 1803 *20-9-1803 Stavoren, xTrientje Theunis de Groot 23-9-1838 Stavoren. Wittness to this marriage was his uncle Tijs Ruurds Stellinga 1781. Ruurd died on 18-3-1845 in Stavoren, 42 years old. The only child I could find:
--Jakob Ruurds Stellinga 1839 *25-1-1839 Stavoren. He married on 8-5-1863 to Tjerkje Douwes Schellinga. His profession: farmhand. On 28-7-1889 he married in Stavoren for the second time to Sytje Glashouwer, after his wife Tjerkje passed away in Stavoren on 23-11-1885.

---Trijntje Stellinga 1869, *13-4-1869 in Stavoren, married in Stavoren on 14-9-1907 to Hermanus van den Berg. They had a daughter Tjerkje on 3-8-1908 in Stavoren; this Tjerkje van den Berg married to Jan van der Velde.
---Douwe Ruurd Stellinga 1872, *26-5-1872 Stavoren, †17-1-1873 Stavoren 5 years old.
---Ruurd Stellinga 1874 Stavoren, †24-12-1874 Stavoren 6 weeks old.
---Douwe Stellinga 1875, *9-9-1875 Stavoren, xTrijntje Tonissen 25-3-1897 in Stavoren. On 15-10-1906 the family Douwe and Trijntje emigrated to the USA, Douwe changed his name into David Jacob Stelger, Trijntje became Katrina/ Trina Stelger. Daughter Tjerkje was renamed Gertrude Stelger and son Jelmer became Charles Stelger. For some time they lived in Paterson, New Jersey. Trijntje/ Katrina/ Trina was together with her children back in the Netherlands in 1907, probably to finish all matters, they had in Stavoren in the Smidstraat a "winkelhuis met ansjovis-visscherij" (shophouse with anchovy-fishery). Later in 1932 they have been back in the Netherlands for a visit..

----Tjerkje Stellinga/ Gertrude Stelger 1898, *20-4-1898 Stavoren. In the US of A her name was Gertrude Stelger, she married to John Snyder in 1920. She died on 15-6-1973 in Paramus, Bergen County, New Jersey, USA.
----Attje Stellinga, *22-5-1899 Stavoren, †22-8-1899 Stavoren 3 months old.
----Jelmer Stellinga/ Charles Stelger 1903, *5-6-1903 Stavoren. He married in the USA to a Hazel. A correspondence with their son David Charles Stelger 1937 (*23-9-1937) learned, that this David Charles Stelger was married to Cornelia Mielke, she died in March 2011... They had no children...
-Durkje Jakobs Stellinga 1811 At the event of the "naamsaanneming" (taking a familyname) on 24-12-1811 she was 23 weeks old. She was born on 6-7-1811 in Stavoren, she went with her father to De Proefkolonie, stayed there after his death and married on 11-4-1839 to Jan Limbeek, who also worked and lived in De Proefkolonie. I found 8 children of Durkje and Jan...
-Pier Jakobs (= Pieter Jakobs) Stellinga 1806 was born on 11-1-1816 te Stavoren and died young on 25-1-1818 in Stavoren, 2 years old.
2.2.2. PIER RUURDS STELLINGA 1773
I do not know very much about Pier Ruurds... I know 2 dates, 30-10-1773: his birth in Oude Mirdum and 7-11-1773 his baptism in the same village of Oude Mirdum/ Oudemirdum. On 24-12-1811 mother Wytske Jakobs stated in the "akte van naamsaanneming" (deed of name adoption), that she had 3 sons at that time. Pier Ruurds probably died between 7-11-1773 and 24-12-1811. I think he died 17-12-1795 in Workum 12 years old.
2.2.3. 64 WYBREN RUURDS STELLINGA 1776
64 Wybren Ruurds 1776 has a number in front of his name. In my system it means he is one of my direct ancestors and appears in the pedigree of my daughters 1a Marike Bernarda Stellinga en 1b Dieuwke Baukje Stellinga. Wybren was born on 4-10-1776 and baptized on 13-10-1776 in Oude Mirdum. His profession was sailor. He married to Sieuwke Goverts on 2-2-1806 in Dokkum. Just like his brother Jakob Ruurds he takes the name Stellinga fot his family-name on 24-12-1811 in Stavoren. In 1817 he vanished from the face of the earth...
"Op heden den negenden Maij achttien honderd vijfendertig, ten verzoeke van Ruurd Stellinga, Tabakskerversknecht te Dockum, kompareerden voor ons Pieter Kuiper Schonegevel, Vrederegter van het Kanton Dockum, Provincie Vriesland, geadsisteerd door den Griffier de navolgende personen, allen wonende te Dockum, en van Competenten ouderdom als: Reinder Stoffels, arbeider, Jacob Raadgen, schoenmaker, Hans de Vries, arbeider en Menke Durks Potter, Roggedrager, Welke verklaarden Zeer wel te kennen den verzoeker Ruurd Stellinga voornoemd en te weten dat Zijn vader Wybren Ruurds Stellinga in den jare achttien honderd Zeventien als Matroos van Dockum vertrokken en sedert dien tijd afwezig is, Zijnde er sedert hoegenaamd geen narigt van hem is vernomen."
Wybren left in 1817 as a sailor from Dokkum and never returned. I have not the faintest idea what happened to him... Did he perish in a ship wreck? I searched in Kristiansand in Noorway after finding a bus stop in a street with the name Stellinga. There was no connection with my family; according to a local Norwegian historian a "stellinga" is in local language a site where 2 men are sawing a big tree trunk with a large pull saw.
64 Wybren Ruurds Stellinga 1776 was - as said - born on 4-10-1776 in Oudemirdum and was married on 2-2-1806 in Dokkum to Sieuwke Goverts. Together they had 3 sons and a daughter. For easier reading and better understanding I underline (and print bold) the names of the children of 64 Wybren Ruurds Stellinga 1776. And... The children of these children are printed in underlined CAPITALS:
--Ruurd Wybrens Stellinga 1807, *17-2-1807 te Dokkum; Ruurd Wybrens 1807 needed the above mentioned "akte van bekendheid" (statement of acquintance) for his marriage on 14-6-1835 to Antje Vrij, daughter of Ernst Jans Vrij. The children of Ruurd and Antje (underlined CAPITALS):

He was born on 27-2-1863 in Dokkum and died on 8 april of the same year, only one month old. His mother Luutske died 2 weeks later, on 25-4-1863, 24 years old. Having children was a risky business in those days...

----Ruurd Johannes Stellinga 1877, *16-9-1877 in Utrecht. He married Bouwiena Hendrika Raadsheer on 25-5-1905 in Utrecht. He was inspector en chief inspector of police in Utrecht and The Hague. He was as racing pigeon keeper member of “De Snelpost” in Utrecht. Ruurd Johannes died 67 years old in Amerongen on 16-3-1946.

-----Bouwiena Johanna (Wini) Stellinga 1910. She married dr. Johannes H. Plokker on 30-9-1935, she went with him to Lucknow in Utar Pradesh in former British India for "werk der medische zending" (work of medical mission). She died there on 9-4-1936.
----Trijntje Stellinga 1879, *20-10-1879 te Utrecht, died, 6 weeks old, on 29-11-1879 in Utrecht.
----Johannes Herman Martinus Stellinga 1880, *1-10-1880 in Utrecht, she married by proxy Helena (Lena) Noteboom on 17-12-1914 in Utrecht. He lived then on Sumatra, Indonesia. From 1910 to 1934 he is listed in the "Regeeringsalmanak voor Nederlandsch Indië" (Government Almanac of Dutch East Indies). He was as "assistent Onderneming" (Business Assistent) living and working in the area of Medan on Sumatra. Listed companies are Ramoenia in Loeboeq Pakam and the "Onderneming Tandjung Morawa" in Medan. Starting 1916 also L. Noteboom is listed. In 1917 the almanak tells, that he is a commissioner in the board of the "Vereeniging voor assistenten in Deli" (Association for Assistents in Deli). Johannes en Lena had some sons and daughters:

---WYBREN RUURDS STELLINGA 1844 *20-9-1844 in Dokkum, married Grietje Simons de Vries on 22-5-1870 in Dokkum. A daughter of Gastina Magdalena Lietze-Stellinga 1868 told my father Govert Stellinga 1913 in a lettre, that Wybren Stellinga 1844 emigrated young to the USA. In a "register van landverhuizers" (register of emigrants) in the National Archives of Zwolle I found this Wybren Stellinga. He left in 1881 with unknown destination. He then was 37 years old and took with him a wife and 2 children. The reason for the emigration was improvement of fate. Wybren Stellinga 1844 obviously went to Chicago in Amerika, because there he lived in 1900 with the household of his daughter Wietske, renamed Elyzabeth and for 9 years married to William Waltman. Wybren at that time is called Wiburn and according to the census of 1900 born in the Netherlands in june 1844 and immgrated in 1881. His wife Wietske and daughter Anna Klazina 1879 are not listed in the Census of 1900, they probably passed away. On the same address 2 children of Wybren/ Wiburn Stellinga are living, i.e. Anna born in Illinois in 1882 and Rudolph (Weber) Stellinga, born in juli 1887, also in Illinois.

In 1852 he sailed as a military volunteer with the ship Samarang to the Dutch East Indies, where he died on 9-7-1854 in Willem I (Batavia, now Jakarta), 42 years old. He was a gunner second class.

This is the text (“printed in italics”) of a certificate of acquaintance, given at the occasion of the marriage of 32 Govert Wybrens Stellinga 1816 and 33 Aaltje van Rijs on 17-1-1841 in Dokkum:
"Bote Schaafsma Boekhandelaar, Johannes Schilwald en Johannes Veltkamp beide dienaren van Politie en Jacob van Rijs mandemaker, allen van competenten ouderdom en wonende te Dokkum, dewelke verklaarden zeer wel te kennen den persoon van Govert Wiebrens Stellinga arbeider wonende te Dokkum, en zeer wel te weten dat zijn vader Wiebren Ruurds Stellinga Sedert drieentwintig jaren afwezig is, zonder te kunnen bepalen of dezelve in leven, dan of hij alreeds overleden is, als zijnde er sedert zijn vertrek uit deze stad nimmer eenig berigt desaangaande bij zijne vrouw ontvangen geworden, niettegenstaande alle aangewende pogingen om de plaats van zijn verblijf op te sporen. More about my direct ancestor 32 Govert Wybrens Stellinga 1816: He was - as said before - born on 12-5-1816 and baptized on 2-6-1816 in Dokkum. He married Aaltje van Rijs on 17-1-1841 in Dokkum. Govert died on 14-3-1846 in Dokkum. After his death Aaltje van Rijs remarried Jacob Petrus Ronner on 30-6-1850 in Dokkum. 2.2.4. TIJS RUURDS STELLINGA 1781
The fourth son of Ruurd Piers 1740 and Wytske Jakobs was Tijs Ruurds 1781. He was born on 19-10-1781 in Bakhuizen in the "grietenij" Gaasterland (=administrative area in Friesland). He was baptized on 19-11-1781. Tijs married Grietje Everts (later having the family name Potjebier) on 19-3-1815. I did not find any children, probably because Grietje Everts already was 48 years old at the time of their marriage... The story of Tijs Ruurds remains one big question mark., although I found Tijs was a witness in 1838 for the marriage of his nephew Ruurd Jakobs Stellinga 1803 to Trientje Theunis de Groot. Tijs Ruurds was 58 years old then; his profession police officer. He died on 8-12-1846 in Stavoren and was a porter then and widower of Grietje Everts Potjebier. I also did not find a document where Tijs is taking a familyname. In Hindeloopen a Grietje Evers died on 17-2-1822, she was 56 years old, unmarried(!), in that document there is a remark, that she had a wandering existence; Is this the same Grietje Everts??
CHAPTER 3 "STREAM B"
This pedigree starts with Herdt Hessels Stellinga 1545. Up to now it was impossible for me to connect this stream B to "my" stream A. Possibly the name Wybren could be an indication, so that this stream B could be related via mother's side to stream A, "my" family Stellinga of today. The differences in places of residence, places of birth are (stream B in Minnertsga and stream A in Gaasterland) is speaking against this theory. For the time being I give (with a huge question mark) the mother of 512 WYBREN TIJSZES the number 1025 and the last known human of stream B number 2050. The scheme below will give some clearance.
Whether this theory has truth in it, needs to be investigated. Some fellow-genealogists copied this thought and published this as if it is a fact!. However this theory is nothing more then a wild guess! Speculation.

So my wild guessis, that a daughter or a sister of Hessel Wybrens was married to my ancestor 2048 PIER THIJSZN 1600… And… that the name Stellinga doing so stayed in the family, till Napoleon in 1811 ordered the people in the Netherlands to take a family name…
The names of 8200 HERDT HESSELS STELLINGA and his wife I found in notes about the grave-stones in the church of Minnertsga. There were 2 notes saying there was a gravestone with their names and a family-armsof the Stellinga-family. Several times searching in- and outside of the church had no result. Maybe because of a fire in the church of Minnertsga in about 1948. After the fire the undamaged stones were replaced; the damaged stones were "geruimd", destroyed... Drawings were made of those stones for conservation in the archives... In the Frysk Jierboekje the family arms ( familiewapen ) is published and registered by the "Raad van de Adel" (Council of Nobility).
CHAPTER 4 "STREAM C"
Searching in the National Archives in Leeuwarden I found: Ane Pieters Stellinga 1792, *21 oktober 1792 in Nijehaske. This Ane was a son of Pieter Annes 1760 and Sytske Pieters van Asperen. Pieter Annes 1760 was a son of Ane Pieters 1724, *25-6-1724 in Wijckel. Ane Pieters 1724 was a son of Pieter Anes from around 1700. Here also I tried to find the connection of the 2 streams A and C of the Stellinga family, but up to now I did not succeed... In 1827 Ane Pieters Stellinga 1792 is a worker; at the time of the birth of Lammigjen in 1829 he is a skipper.
A later found document shows, that Pieter Annes 1760 had an older sister: Baukje Anes Stellinga 1749, she died on 18-2-1826 in Oppenhuizen in the age of 77, widow of Douwe Piers Sjaardema, Baukje was born in Goënga. She is a daughter of before mentioned Ane Pieters 1724 and Hinke Anskes.
In 1821 ANE PIETERS STELLINGA 1792 lived in Nijehaske "in het schip leggend bij de kalkovens" (=in the ship lying by the lime kilns). He married his first wife Wytske Arjens Boonstra in Haskerland on 29-3-1821.

-Martjen Anes Stellinga 1821 *16-10-1821 in Nijehaske. Martjen later also is called in the documents in Overijssel Hartjen or Makka. She married Johannes van de Bekke/ Terbekke from Borne on 25-4-1851 in Avereest.
-Wytske Stellinga 1823 and Akke Stellinga 1823, twins, were born on 4-11-1823 in Haskerland. Akke died on 13 november, moeder Wytske died on 14 november and sister Wytske on 25 november of the same tear 1823. In November 1823 Ane Pieters lost in 3 weeks time almost his complete family! Ane Pieters and his daughter Martjen I found back after this disaster in Rheezerveen in Overijssel, having a relation with Sietske Andries Mooijbroek (also called: André Sijpke Mooijbroek or André Sijpke Bartels), born around 1800 and possibly from Veendam in Groningen. Probably Sietske and Ane Pieters 1792 were not married, they had at least one child together:

The first Stellinga I found of this stream D was Homme Theunis Stellinga, ~1-7-1800 Pingjum. Nearer investigation gave a little stream D. I had some expectations to find the connection between the streams Stellinga of the above chapters. Homme is the last man of this stream: he had 4 married daughters, when he died in Pingjum on 1-12-1864. His 4 daughters(see below for more details):

The oldest Stellinga I found was Rein Theunis; he was schoolmaster in Witmarsum. In the "collectie in de oude leeszaal Bibliotheek nr 151" of the Tresoar-archive in Leeuwarden something is written about the schoolmasters of Wonseradeel:
"In 1756 verscheen als nieuwe schoolmeester (in Witmarsum) mr. Rein Theunis, van Echten; hij was hier reeds 10 april 1756. Hij trouwde 22 Nov. 1761 met Sytske Jetzes, ook alhier. Zijn naam komt voor op de Avondmaalsbeker van 1756. Meester Rein is hier in 't laatst van 1769 overleden. In mei 1770 ontving zijn weduwe nog tractement over 3/4 jaar: 112 guldens 10 stuivers." [=In 1756 a new schoolmaster mr. Rein Theunis from Echten came to Witmarsum; he already was on April, 10 1756. He married Sytske Jetzes from here on November, 22 1761. His name is on the Communion Cup of 1756. Master Rein died here in the end of 1769. In May 1770 his widow received payment for 3/4 year: 112 guilders and 10 "stuivers" (10 peaces of 5 cents)]

CHAPTER 7 THE NAME STELLINGA
"It is curious, that the word "Stellinga" is used in very old chronicles, not as a family name but obviously as a name for a function.
First there is the historical work of NITHARDUS, a Frankish chronicle writer in the 9th century, via his mother a grandson of Charles the Great. He wrote in his book about the quarrels of the grandsons of Charles the Great untill the year 843 “Historiarum Libri Quattor” by order of Charles the Balt (823-877). This Charles was one of the sons of Ludwig (?) (778-840); the other sons were Lothar I en Ludwig the German. The empire was divided between them after the death of their father and this resulted in war between them. Nithardus tells us, that Lothar I wanted support from the Saxons, he promised them to get back formerly lost rights.
The Saxons made an uprising and they choose themselves leaders they called “Stellinga”. The Latin text from NITHARDUS is: "..qua supra modum cupidi, nomen novum sibi, id est Stellinga, imposuerunt" (..extremely gready, they took a new name: Stellinga)
They weren’t exactly the good guys. With all forces united they drove the Lords out of the country and they lived “more antiquo” – as they wanted (NITHARDUS). This is made clear in the “Annales Bertiniani”, where you read, that the “Stellingii”, always inclined to evil, decided to follow the pagan customs more than the sacraments of Christianity. In the “Annales Xantenses” is stated, that in that time in the whole of Saxony the power of the servants (servorum) over their masters had become very great and that the first did many unreasonable things.
But things were very bad for them in the end… Ludwig the German defeated them in an honorable battle.
Afterwards the Stellinga have revolted again, but were defeated again and destroyed in big battle.
NITHARDUS moralises tot this event: "sic auctoritate interiit, quod sine auctoritate surgere praesumpsit" (in this way the power destroys whatever dares to rise without any authority).
What is the meaning of the word “Stellinga” used here?
According to prof. dr.A. van der LEE of “De Vrije Universiteit” (letter dated 28-8-1969) you can assume, that the above mentioned unfree serfs called themselves "Stellinga" a so called "nomen appellativum", meaning those who belong to the “stal” (stable), also farmer servants or servants in common. After a lot of century’s this name has become a family name, especially in the northern parts of the old Germania, as you can notice in the Dutch names Huisman, Molenaar de Boer, etc. (in English Carpenter, Sawyer?)
In about the 13th century the word “Stellinga" has been upgraded to fully powered farmerlords also having the right to speak justice. Think about "Stellingwerf", "werf" (=place) of the Stellingi ."stellingen".
Drs. J. VISSER, chartermaster at the Rijksarchief (State Archive) of Friesland, says to this, that one can think of other examples of upgrading of names of a profesion name or rank: marshall (at first that was a horse-servant) or the English word knight (Dutch “knecht”= servant)
Prof. van der LEE tells , that the additive "-ing" in old German had the primary function of constructing family names and than has the meaning of “belonging to ..” or “part of ..” Husinga (belonging to the house (in Dutch: huis or huus). From this name the well known family name Huizinga develops.
It has to be the same with the word "Stellinga". This word, pointing out a group of persons, remained in the language, but the contents have changed throughout the century’s, till it became a family name…..
Prof. Dr. W. J. BUMA (Fries Instituut (Frisian Institute) of the Public University at Groningen) is heading the same direction. The name Stellinga has to be coming from the word "stelle", which is according the Friese Woordenboek (Frisian dictionnary) van Waling-Dijkstra e.o.: "real estate, land, for which the owner according to the former Frisian Right had to pay a certain tax, resulting in a right to vote for the owner.
Further the professor indicates the way the name Stellinga has been formed. Adding the suffix –ing the word stelling is made, meaning someone living on a “stelle” (a piece of land in Friesland century’s ago). The suffix –a, in the old Frisian language the plural genitive is used to make from the word “stelling” the family name Stellinga. A Stellinga was thus originally a person descending from someone living on a “stelle”.
Drs. H. HALBERTSMA, author of the IIId chapter of "Het Friese Koninkrijk" (The Frisian Kingdom) telling the history of Friesland, wrote in a lettre dd 23-5-1969 his thoughts about Stellinga. He says Stellinga indicates a function, a judge of lower order, a village-judge. According to him the name is not coming from Friesland, but from Neder Saksen (Lower Saxony) According to him, and prof van der Lee agrees, the region Stellingwerf was part of the county Drenthe (History of Friesland, page 586) east of Friesland.
HALBERTSMA explains also, that the “Stellinga” became the lower country nobility, leading the resistance against the feudalisation of the community by the Karolingians. The Karolingians were helped by the higher nobility, because the higher nobility did not have any disadvantages of this process….
The meaning of the familyname Stellinga seems to be derived from the word “stelle” as a piece of land including the right to vote. Prof. Buma says so, and also the chartermaster Visser… “
