7 The name Stellinga explained

INTRODUCTION

This book wil tell something about the Stellinga-family. My father Govert Stellinga started searching for his ancestors shortly after World War II and since then we expanded our knowledge about the Stellinga’s to what we know now. We got information from other Stellinga-members and from several Dutch provincial archives. There are still lots of questions remaining…

There are 4 “streams” kown to me, streams I cannot connect to each other up to now. Also there are some Stellinga’s of whom we did not discover the link to the others.

I call the biggest and longest “stream” in the family stream A. This stream is my family. This stream is flowing from 1625 til present. Not all side-streams are known to me. For this stream I refer you to hapter 2.

Stream B was “discovered” second and is flowing from about 1540- 1650. We still have not managed to connect stream B to stream A. Simular are apart from the family name the male first name Wybren. More about that in chapter 3 This stream B was found in Minnertsga, where the name was on a gravestone (1620) on the graveyard near the church. Searching for the stone on the graveyard had no results. Maybe because the church burnt down in 1948. The damaged gravestones were cleared after the fire... Our knowledge about this family tree comes completely from the Archives in Leeuwarden, Friesland.

I can tell a lot about stream C. Simular with stream A is the first name Pier (=Pieter). Simular with stream B is the first name Ane or Anne (Johannes?). This stream goes, as far as I know, from 1700 till today from Wijckel through Gorredijk and Haskerland up to 1830 in Rheezerveen. More about this stream in chapter 4.

I discovered by genealogical research another stream. I will call it stream D.In this stream unusual names like Homme, Theunis and Rein. I haven't found a connection with the other families yet...

All my direct ancestors I give a number according the principle of the family series: When I have number 1, my father has number 2 and my mother that number +1; my grandfather fatherside is 4, my mother's father 6, his wife, my grandmother 6 + 1 (=7😂) I place the appropriate numbers before the name followed by the birth year of that person...

CHAPTER 2 STROOM A: MY FAMILY

2.1 TOT 1800.

Starting at Pijer Thijssen the Stellinga family can be searched, but that is a far bigger job than finding the row from father to father as done in chapter 1. I will explain the current knowledge of the family, clarified with diagrams.

PIJER THIJSZN 1600 We know little about the oldest known Stellinga. Mr.

The descendants of Thijs Wybrens 1695 and Wybren Piers 1737 are not known yet.

-512 Pier Wybrens 1695 was owner and user of place 13 and 14 (in 1738 and 1748 together with his brother Thijs, in 1758 and 1768 alone). Pier Wybrens had at least 2 sons: Wybren, baptised on 28 july 1737 at Sondel and Ruurd, baptised in august 1740 at Oude Mirdum. Ruurd Piers was farmer at Oude Mirdum (partly on place 13 and 14). He died before 1811. His wife Wytske Jakobs takes the name Stellinga in an official document on December, 24 1811, together with 2 of her sons. Taking a family name was ordered by the French government (Napoleon) of Holland. It had to be done before 1-1-1812…. On 24 december 1811 Wytske Jakobs claims to have 3 sons. Her son Pier Ruurds is not mentioned! Probably he died before 1811. Pier Ruurds was born on 30-10-1773 and baptised on 7-11-1773 at Oude Mirdum (see chapter 2.2.2). I tell more about Jakob Ruurds Stellinga 1769 in chapter 2.2.1, Tijs Ruurds 1781 in chapter 2.2.4 and about my direct ancestor 128 Wybren Ruurds 1776 and his descendants in chapter 2.2.3.

2.2 THE STELLINGA'S AFTER 1800

2.2.1 JAKOB RUURDS STELLINGA 1769

Jakob Ruurds takes the name Stellinga on 24-12-1811 just like his mother Wytske Jakobs. He was married to Janke Jelles (later Hoekstra). It was her second marriage, she had a daughter from her previous marriage with Jarig Jakobs:

-Sijke Jarigs, born on 20-11-1793; in 1816 her name is Sijke Jarigs Stellinga at the time of her marriage to Jacob Jans Bijlsma dd. 11-9-1816 at Woudsend. Jarig Jakobs died in about 1795. Janke Jelles remarrid Jakob Ruurds Stellinga as a widow. Jacob and Janke Jelles had some children:

Jakob Ruurds died Novembre 8, 1818 in The "Proefkolonie" in Drente. Starting the "Proefkolonie" was the beginning of the village Frederiksoord, the first settlement of the "Maatschappij van Weldadigheid". In this settlement the "Maatschappij" wanted to raise impoverished Dutchmen and give them a chance for a better life. 1818 was no good year for the family of Jakob: his 2 year old son Pier dies January 25, his wife Janke shortly before travelling to the "Proefkolonie" on Octobre 9 and he himself dies on Novembre 8 shortly after arriving in the "Proefkolonie".

I know, that Wytske Jakobs 1798 married Anne H. van der Werf, had a daughter Trijntje in 1831 and a son Jakob in 1836. I don’t know anything about son Jelle Jakobs 1800 but his year of birth 1800 and his place of birth Molkwerum. Durkje Jakobs 1811 was 23 weeks old on 24-12-1811, Durkje married Jan Limbeek on April 11, 1839. Pier Jakobs (=Pieter Jakobs) was born on 11-1-1816 at Stavoren and died 2 years old on January 25, 1816 in Stavoren.

RUURD JAKOBS 1803 was born in Stavoren in 1803 and married 23-9-1838 to Trientje Theunis de Groot. Witness to this marriage was uncle Tijs Ruurds Stellinga 1781. Their only son Jakob Ruurds 1839 was born on 25-1-1839.

JAKOB RUURDS 1839 married to Tjerkje Douwes Schellinga 8-5-1863. They had many children, most of them died young. Trijntje Stellinga 1869, born 13-4-1869 in Stavoren, married Hermanus van den Berg on 14-9-1907 in Stavoren and had a daughter Tjerkje van den Berg born 3-8-1908 Stavoren.

Their son Douwe 1875, born 9-9-1875 in Stavoren, married Trijntje Tonissen 25-3-1897 in Stavoren. They had 2 children: Tjerkje Stellinga 20-4-1898 in Stavoren and Jelmer Stellinga 5-6-1903 Stavoren.

On Octobre 15, 1906. Douwe and Trijntje emigrated with their 2 children to the USA. Douwe became David Jacob Stelger, Trijntje became Katrina Stelger.Daughter Tjerkje was renamed Gertrude Stelger an Jelmer became Charles Stelger... They lived some time in Paterson, New Jersey. They have been back in the Netherlands in 1907 probably to handle their business: they had a shop in the Smidsstraat in Stavoren and a little fishing company for ansjofish (1 boat).

Tjerkje/ Gertrude married with a John Snyder and had a daughter Gertrude Snyder. Jelmer/ Charles married a Hazel and had a son David Charles Charles on 23-9-1937. He married Cornelia Mielke, they had no children...

2.2.2. PIER RUURDS STELLINGA 1773

I dont know anything about this part of the Stellinga family. I did not find any facts but two dates: born 30-10-1773 at Oude Mirdum and baptised 7-11-1773 in the same place. On 24-12-1811 mother Wytske Jakobs claims to have 3 sons. I assume that Pier Ruurds died between 7-11-1773 and 24-12-1811. Maybe we’ll find more……

2.2.3. 64 WYBREN RUURDS STELLINGA 1776

"Bote Schaafsma Bookstorekeeper, Johannes Schilwald and Johannes Veltkamp both servers of the Police and Jacob van Rijs basket-maker, all of competent age and living at Dokkum, declared to know very well the person of Govert Wiebrens Stellinga worker at Dokkum, and to know very well, that his father Wiebren Ruurds Stellinga Since twentythree years is absent, without being able to know, whether his father is alive or already dead, because there were no messages since his departure received by his wife, in spite of all efforts done to seek for the place of his whereabouts.

Whitnesses declare to know that they knew Govert Wiebrens Stellinga always very well an very close, so they know very well, what they declared. "

32 Govert Wybrens 1816 needed this declaration to be allowed to marry Aaltje van Rijs...

64 WYBREN RUURDS 1776 has a number in front of his name, that means he is one of my direct ancestors! He was born married on February 2, 1806 in Dokkum. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter:

-Ruurd Wybrens, born February 17, 1807 in Dokkum, he married June 14, 1835 to Antje Vrij, daughter of Ernst Jans Vrij.

-Antje Wybrens Stellinga was born August 31, 1809 in Dokkum.She married Watze de Vries June 23, 1839 in Leeuwarden. I found 4 children in the archives...

-Pier WYbrens was born Octobre 9, 1811 in Dokkum. Pier went in 1832 in military service and became a gunner.In 1845 he took the place of Dirk Jelles Wijngaarden who was selected to serve in the army. Dirk Jelles paid Pier Ruurds to do so. In 1852 Pier went as a volunteer soldier to Netherlands Indies, where he died , 42 years old, on June 9, 1854 in Willem I (a district of Batavia, now Jakarta).

-32 Govert Wybrens was born May 12, 1816 in Dokkum. Later more about him...

Ernst Stellinga 1839 married twice: 25-5-1862 to Luutske Kiestra at Dokkum, Friesland and 15-5 1864 at Dokkum to Anna Klasina Kreeft. Children from these marriages:

With Ruurd Stellinga 1865 the Stellinga-family goes on: he marries 30-11-1887 at Utrecht to Emmetje Vermeer. They had 3 sons, Ernst, born 11-2-1888 Utrecht (grandfather Ernst is witness), son Herman, born 16-10-1891 Utrecht and Rudolph Johannes Stellinga, born 20-1898 Utrecht. And 2 daughters: Emma Elisabeth 11-6- 1889 and Anna Clasina 16-3-1896 both in Utrecht. Ernst married (1)Jannetje Everdina Meijer 20-4-1016 Utrecht, (2)Barbara Anna Moos 7-9-1920 Utrecht; Herman married Geertruida Johanna van Mechelen 30-10-1919 Amsterdam, Emma Elisabeth married Anthonie Mulder 17-6-1909 Utrecht; Anna Clasina 1896 died when she was 15...; Rudolph Johannes married Jannetje Diepeveen 2-11-1922 Amsterdam.

Johannes Ruurd 1842 was born 12-3-1842 Dokkum and married 18-5-1867 at Leeuwarden, Friesland tot Johanna Jansen. They had 5 daughters and 2 sons:

-Gastina Magdalena, born 16-7-1868 at Dokkum, married to Carl Ludwig August Lietze 26-9-1895 Utrecht;

-Antje (Anna), born 21-9-1870 at Dokkum, married 25-5-1899 Utrecht to Douwe Jansen (a nephew);

-Dirkje, born 24-12-1872 at Dokkum, died unmarried 24-1-1953 Utrecht 80 jr

-Johanna, born 22-4-1875 at Dokkum, also not married;

-Ruurd Johannes 1877, born 16-9-1877 at Utrecht. He married 25-5-1905 Utrecht to Bouwiena Hendrika Raadsheer. They had at least one son Johannes Ruurd 1907 and one daughter Wini 1910;

-Trijntje, born 20-10-1879 at Utrecht, died young 29-11-1879 6 weeks old.

-Johannes Herman Martinus, born 1-10-1880 Utrecht, married by proxy to Helena Noteboom (he (Johannes) lived in Sumatra, Indonesia, she in the Netherlands. They had many children: Wilhelmina Johanna (Mieke) Stellinga, born 3-2-1916 Perbaoengan, Indonesia, a twin Johanna Levina Stellinga and Johannes Ruurd (Hans) Stellinga born 25-6-1917 Lubuk Pakam, Sumatra, Indonesia, Dirk/ Derk Gerdes Anne Stellinga born 27-8-1918 19-2-1943, died Curaçao 24 years old, Helena Margaretha (Lenie) Stellinga 1920, married to Angenus van der Heiden, Douwe (Derek) Stellinga 1925, and Jan Roelof Stellinga 1925 and Jan Stellinga 1933.

-Sikke Gustaaf Stellinga 30-5-1885 Utrecht he died when he was 2 years old.

Wybren Ruurds Stellinga 1844 was born 20-9-1844 at Dokkum, married 22-5-1870 to Grietje Simons de Vries at Dokkum. They had 7 children, 5 died young: ; ; and againa daughter

-Wietske, born 29-12-1870 at Dokkum

-Antje, born 4-3-1872 at Dokkum died 14-7-1872

-Antje, born 14-5-1873 died 3-10-1873.

-Grietje and Antje, a twin, born 13-11-1874 Dokkum, died one day later on 14 november

-Ruurd, born 12-8-1877 Dokkum, died 1-5-1878 8 months old.

-Anna Klazina, born 15-5-1879 at Dokkum.

-Anna Stellinga, born March 1882 Illinois

Rudolph (Weber) Stellinga, born 13-7-1887 Illinois, married to Clara Boon oor Boone, he died 31-12-1961 Camdenton 74 years old (Dale Blair Memorial).

A daughter of Gastina Magdalena Lietze-Stellinga wrote in a letter to my father Govert, that Wybren Ruurds Stellinga 1844 went to America when he was still young. In a “register of emigrants” (register van landverhuizers) (archives at Zwolle?) a Wybren Stellinga is mentioned leaving in 1881 with unknown destination. He was at that time 37 years old and had 2 children. This could be our Wybren Stellinga 1844 and his daughters Wietske 1870 and Anna Klazina 1879.

The third son of 64 Wybren Ruurds Stellinga is my direct ancestor 32 Govert Wybrens Stellinga 1816. Govert Wybrens Stellinga was born on 12-5-1816 and baptized on 2-6-1816 at Dokkum. He married Aaltje van Rijs at Dokkum on 17-1-1841 (=January, 17 1841). Govert Wybrens himself died on 14-3-1846 at Dokkum, 29 years old, while 3 days later his son Govert was born on 17-3-1846. Aaltje remarried 4 years later Jacob Ronner 30-6-1850 Dokkum. The children of Govert Stellinga en Aaltje van Rijs:

-Jakob on 8-5-1841. He married on 23-12-1866 at Leeuwarden to Trijntje Reis. They had a son Govert on 22-3-1867 at Dokkum and on 15-8-1870 at Leeuwarden a son Hendrikus. Hendrikus 1870 died 22-8-1873 in Veendam 3 years old..Govert 1867 married on 2-1-1892 to Jacomina Petronella Schutte, born 20-2-1872. At the time of their marriage (2-1-1892) they both acknowledge Catharina Johanna, born on 21-4-1890, as their daughter. On 2-7-1892 at Kampen Govert is born. Govert 1892 married to Petronella Adiana Bakx 4-1-1922 Utrecht. Their third child is Hendrik Jan Stellinga, born 2-1-1895 in Kampen, married to Neeltje Dobber 25-9-1924 Landsmeer; Their fourth child is a daughter Wilhelmina Henrietta born 25-1-1904 Utrecht, married to Johannes Westrik 19-3-1930 Utrecht.

-Wybren, born on 7-11-1842, died on 24-4-1845 at Dokkum.
-16 Govert 1846 was born on 17-3-1846 and married 16-11-1873 to Annigje de Jong. On 24-3-1881 a daughter Aaltje was born and on 22-1-1883 son 8 Hendrik 1883. On 15-6-1885 there is a daughter again: Trijntje Riemke, who died on 24-4-1888. On 2-6-1889 Trijntje Riemke was born.

8 Hendrik 1883 is my grandfather and is placed in the quarterly list as: 8 HENDRIK STELLINGA 1883. Hendrik married to Trijntje Riemersma 30-5-1912 in Rauwerderhem and had 3 children: 4 GOVERT STELLINGA 1913, Klaske and Annigje. I (Douwe Govert 1945) married on 27 december 1968 to 3 HENDRINA ALIDA VAN DORMALEN 1946; we had 2 daughters: 1a MARIKE BERNARDA STELLINGA 1972 and 1b DIEUWKE BAUKJE STELLINGA 1975.

2.2.4. TIJS RUURDS STELLINGA 1781

The fourth son of Ruurd Piers 1740 and Wytske Jakobs was Tijs Ruurds 1781. He was born on 19-10-1781 at Bakhuizen in the “grietenij” (region or community) Gaasterland. He was baptized on 19-11-1781. He married Grietje Everts Potjebier March 19, 1815. I did not find any children, maybe because Grietje was at the time of their marriage already 48 years old. Whether there are any descendants to Tijs Ruurds is unclear. I did find, that Tijs Ruurds was a witness to the wedding of his nephew Ruurd Jakobs Stellinga 1803 to Trientje Theunis de Groot. Tijs Ruurds was 58 years old at that moment and was a policeman. He died on 8-12-1846 at Stavoren 65 years; he was a porter and widower of Grietje Everts Potjebier. Whether or not he had children, I do not know…. I did not any document about him taking a family-name. I did find a document about the death of a Grietje Everts, 56 years old, unmarried, in Hindeloopen on 17-2-1822. In yhis document is stated, that she had a wandering existence ("zwervend bestaan"). This could be "our" Grietje Everts Potjebier...

CHAPTER 3 "STROOM B"

This stream B starts with Herdt Hessels Stellinga 1545. Up to now it has been impossible to connect stream B to stream A. Possibly the name Wybren is an indication, in a way that this stream is connected through a mother to my family. So: maybe 1025 ??? could be a daughter or a sister of Wybren Herdts Stellinga.... Attention: this nothing more than a wild guess!! The difference is in the living places: stream B living in Minnertsga; stream A in Oude Mirdum, an indication denuying this possibility. For the time being I give (with a very, very big question mark) the mother of 512 WYBREN TIJSZES the number 1025 and the last known of stream B number 2050. The drawing below will make things more clear:

I found the names of 8200 HERDT HESSELS STELLINGA and his wife in some notes about the gravestones in the church of Minnertsga and the surrounding graveyard . There were 2 notes about this HERDT HESSELS and his wife: there was a gravestone with their names and the family arms of the Stellinga-family. Searching for the stones in side and outside the church did not have any results…. Maybe that was a result of a fire in about 1948. They cleaned up the broken gravestones after a fire in the church of Minnertsga...

The family arms is pictured on the front page. It is taken from the “Frysk Jierboek” of 1963 and approved by the Council of the Nobility.

CHAPTER 4 "STROOM C"

While searching the Archives in Leeuwarden I found: ANE PIETERS STELLINGA 1792, born 21 october 1792 at Nijehaske. This Ane was a son of PIETER ANNES 1760 and SYTSKE PIETERS VAN ASPEREN. Pieter Annes 1760 was a son of Ane Pieters 1724, born 25-6-1724 in Wijckel. He was a son of Pieter Annes 1700, married to Jetske Heeres.

Ane Pieters Stellinga 1792 lived in 1821 in Nijehaske, Friesland "in the ship lying at the limekiln". He married his first wife Wytske Arjens Boonstra 29-3-1821. Children from this marriage:

-Martjen Anes was born on 16-10-1821 in Nijehaske. She married 25-4-1851 in Avereest to Johannes van de Bekke/ Terbekke from Borne...In Overijssel Martjen also was called Hartjen or Makka.

-Wytske and Akke, a twin, was born Nov, 4-1823. Akke died on November, 13, mother Wytske on November, 14 and sister Wytske on November, 25 1821. Delivering a child was a risky business in those days for child and mother....

After this disaster we find Ane Pieters back in Rheezerveen in Northeast Overijssel, where he had a relation with Sietske Andries Mooijbroek (or André Sijpke Mooijbroek or Andé Sijpke Bartels, born around 1800 en possibly from Veendam. I could not find a marriage. Maybe Sietske and Ane 1792 were not married... They had children too:

-Pieter Anes on 12-6-1827 in Rheezerveen. He married Aaltje van der Weide 24-5-1851 Ambt Hardenberg. Below the schedule more about Pieter 1827 and Aaltje...

-Lammigjen on 6-7-1829 . Lammigjen married Andries Jans Bouwhuis 6-4-1866 Ambt Hardenberg.

In 1827 Ane Pieters is worker and when Lammigjen is born in 1829, he claims to be skipper.

-Hendrik Stellinga 1862 was born 29-11-1862 Avereest.

-Eliza Stellinga 1865 was born in Avereest 27-4-1865. She married Albert Bols in Coevorden on 17-4-1886.

-Aaltje Stellinga 1868 was born 18-5-1868 in Ambt Hardenberg. She married Hinderikus Croesen in Coevorden on 23-9-1887

At the start I had to say that stream C went until about 1830 in Rheezerveen. In the meantime our knowledge about stream C has been extended to the above mentioned. From letters of Piet Stellinga (PIETER HENDRIK 1949) from Oppenhuizen and through investigations together with him came clear, that Hendrik Stellinga 1862 married to Hillechien Moes 1864 on 26-4-1895 at Emmen. In 1896 they moved from Emmen to Harsewinkel (Germany). There his son Pieter is born in 1897. On 14-10-1899 Jentje is born in Medgehall (England), the children in 1901-1909 are born in Schöninghsdorf in Germany again. Hendrik Stellinga 1862 died 24-3-1932 at Schoonebeek in Drente, Netherlands

Hendrik Stellinga 1862 was born 29-11-1862 in Avereest. He married Hillechien Moes 26-4-1895 in Emmen. In 1896 they moved from Emmen to Harsewinkel in Germany. Between 1897 and 1899 they moved to Schotland. Before 1901 they moved back to Schöninghsdorf in Germany. Hendrik 1862 died 69 years old on 24-3-1932 in Schoonebeek. The children of Hendrik 1862 and Hillechien:

-Pieter Stellinga was born in Erica, Emmen 13-1-1896. He probably died in Harsewinkel Germany. I did not find his death in the archives of the Netherlands.

-Pieter Stellinga 1897 was born 24-3-1897 in Harsewinkel. He married Hendrikje Tiemens/ Tiemes 23-3-1923 in Schoonebeek.

They had 3 children:

-Hendrik Stellinga 1923 born 17-5-1923 in Nieuw-Amsterdam, he married Fennechina Trijntje Blok. He died 3-7-1999 in Sneek. Hendrik and Fennechina had 3 children: Pieter Hendrik Stellinga 1949 was born 11-10-1949 Assen. He married Saskia Been. He died 30-10-1987 in Boornzwaag.

-Hendrik Harmannus (Hans) Stellinga 1952 was born 1-10-1952. He married Benita (Nita) Tange. He died 10-12-2006 in Boornzwaag 54 years old.

Of this stream I discovered first Homme Theunis Stellinga 1800. Further investigations produced a little stream D. I hoped this stream could make the connections with the other streams, but that hope was in vain. Homme was the last man in this stream: he had 4 married daughters at the time of his death in Pingjum on Decembre 1, 1864.

-Theuntje Hommes Stellinga 1841 was born 12-11-1841 in Pingjum (Wonseradeel), she married Hyltje Jacobs de Vries 6-5-1865 in Wonseradeel. She emigrated to the USA 11-5-1901 with her children Homme de Vries and

Aafke Hyltjes de Vries, but she obviously returned: she died 25-6-1927 in Wonseradeel at the age of 85 years. Her children stayed in the USA??

Is mentioned at the death certificate of Jan Stellinga dd. 27-8-1826 at Leek, Groningen. Jan did not reach the age of 2 years yet, living at “het Heerenveen" and this Jan was a son of Antje Pieters.

JACOBA JANS STELLINGA,

born 20-1-1764 at Leeuwarden, died at Harlingen on 9-6-1824 at the age of 60, widow of Jan Jacobs Burggraaf.

ANTJE PIETERS STELLNGA, mentioned in a death certificate of Jan Stellinga dd. 27-8-1826 te Leek. Jan was one and a half year old, from Heerenveen, "wonend op het Heerenveen" and this Jan was a son of Antje Pieters.

J R STELLINGA, In the newspaper "Leeuwarder Courant" of 7-1-1836 staat: in "het beheer van de betonningen, bebakeningen en verlichtingen, welke tot het departement van marine zijn overgegaan, zijn benoemd: ....., tot lichtwachter te Stavoren, JR Stellinga, .......". This means: J R was appointed guardian of the lighthouse of Stavoren...

6 THE NAME STELLINGA

"It is curious, that the word "Stellinga" is used in very old chronicles, not as a family name but obviously as a name for a function.

First there is the historical work of NITHARDUS, a Frankish chronicle writer in the 9th century, via his mother a grandson of Charles the Great. He wrote in his book about the quarrels of the grandsons of Charles the Great untill the year 843 “Historiarum Libri Quattor” by order of Charles the Balt (823-877). This Charles was one of the sons of Ludwig (?) (778-840); the other sons were Lothar I en Ludwig the German. The empire was divided between them after the death of their father and this resulted in war between them. Nithardus tells us, that Lothar I wanted support from the Saxons, he promised them to get back formerly lost rights.

The Saxons made an uprising and they choose themselves leaders they called “Stellinga”. The Latin text from NITHARDUS is: "..qua supra modum cupidi, nomen novum sibi, id est Stellinga, imposuerunt" (..extremely gready, they took a new name: Stellinga)

They weren’t exactly the good guys. With all forces united they drove the Lords out of the country and they lived “more antiquo” – as they wanted (NITHARDUS). This is made clear in the “Annales Bertiniani”, where you read, that the “Stellingii”, always inclined to evil, decided to follow the pagan customs more than the sacraments of Christianity. In the “Annales Xantenses” is stated, that in that time in the whole of Saxony the power of the servants (servorum) over their masters had become very great and that the first did many unreasonable things.

But things were very bad for them in the end… Ludwig the German defeated them in an honorable battle.

Afterwards the Stellinga have revolted again, but were defeated again and destroyed in big battle.

NITHARDUS moralises tot this event: "sic auctoritate interiit, quod sine auctoritate surgere praesumpsit" (in this way the power destroys whatever dares to rise without any authority).

What is the meaning of the word “Stellinga” used here?

According to prof. dr.A. van der LEE of “De Vrije Universiteit” (letter dated 28-8-1969) you can assume, that the above mentioned unfree serfs called themselves "Stellinga" a so called "nomen appellativum", meaning those who belong to the “stal” (stable), also farmer servants or servants in common. After a lot of century’s this name has become a family name, especially in the northern parts of the old Germania, as you can notice in the Dutch names Huisman, Molenaar de Boer, etc. (in English Carpenter, Sawyer?)

In about the 13th century the word “Stellinga" has been upgraded to fully powered farmerlords also having the right to speak justice. Think about "Stellingwerf", "werf" (=place) of the Stellingi ."stellingen".

Drs. J. VISSER, chartermaster at the Rijksarchief (State Archive) of Friesland, says to this, that one can think of other examples of upgrading of names of a profesion name or rank: marshall (at first that was a horse-servant) or the English word knight (Dutch “knecht”= servant)

Prof. van der LEE tells , that the additive "-ing" in old German had the primary function of constructing family names and than has the meaning of “belonging to ..” or “part of ..” Husinga (belonging to the house (in Dutch: huis or huus). From this name the well known family name Huizinga develops.

It has to be the same with the word "Stellinga". This word, pointing out a group of persons, remained in the language, but the contents have changed throughout the century’s, till it became a family name…..

Prof. Dr. W. J. BUMA (Fries Instituut (Frisian Institute) of the Public University at Groningen) is heading the same direction. The name Stellinga has to be coming from the word "stelle", which is according the Friese Woordenboek (Frisian dictionnary) van Waling-Dijkstra e.o.: "real estate, land, for which the owner according to the former Frisian Right had to pay a certain tax, resulting in a right to vote for the owner.

Further the professor indicates the way the name Stellinga has been formed. Adding the suffix –ing the word stelling is made, meaning someone living on a “stelle” (a piece of land in Friesland century’s ago). The suffix –a, in the old Frisian language the plural genitive is used to make from the word “stelling” the family name Stellinga. A Stellinga was thus originally a person descending from someone living on a “stelle”.

Drs. H. HALBERTSMA, author of the IIId chapter of "Het Friese Koninkrijk" (The Frisian Kingdom) telling the history of Friesland, wrote in a lettre dd 23-5-1969 his thoughts about Stellinga. He says Stellinga indicates a function, a judge of lower order, a village-judge. According to him the name is not coming from Friesland, but from Neder Saksen (Lower Saxony) According to him, and prof van der Lee agrees, the region Stellingwerf was part of the county Drenthe (History of Friesland, page 586) east of Friesland.

HALBERTSMA explains also, that the “Stellinga” became the lower country nobility, leading the resistance against the feudalisation of the community by the Karolingians. The Karolingians were helped by the higher nobility, because the higher nobility did not have any disadvantages of this process….

The meaning of the familyname Stellinga seems to be derived from the word “stelle” as a piece of land including the right to vote. Prof. Buma says so, and also the chartermaster Visser… “

And there is our ancestor WYBREN TYSSES (died 1715) who was owner of some “places” (=stelle’s) and village-judge..!"
